We often think service is something extraordinary.
Helping after a disaster.
Volunteering at an organization.
Changing someone’s life in a dramatic way.
While those acts certainly matter, I’ve learned that most meaningful service happens somewhere much quieter.
It happens at home.
It happens in ordinary moments.
It happens every day.
The Greatest Lessons Didn’t Come From My Near-Death Experience Alone
Many people ask how my near-death experience changed me.
The truth is…
The experience gave me clarity.
Life gave me the opportunity to practice it.
Coming home meant learning how to live differently.
Not through extraordinary moments.
But through ordinary ones.
Maria Changed My Understanding of Service
As the father of a daughter with special needs, there have been countless moments when I wished I could solve every challenge she faced.
Like many parents and caregivers, I wanted answers.
I wanted certainty.
I wanted healing.
Instead…
Life invited me into something deeper.
I discovered that service wasn’t about fixing someone’s life.
It was about faithfully walking beside them.
Sometimes the greatest act of love isn’t changing someone’s circumstances.
It’s refusing to leave them alone in them.
Love Becomes Visible Through Service
One of the greatest misconceptions about love is that it’s only a feeling.
Real love moves.
It listens.
It waits.
It stays.
It chooses patience when frustration would be easier.
It offers presence when solutions don’t exist.
That’s the kind of service every relationship needs.
Whether you’re raising a child, caring for a spouse, supporting a parent, or simply showing up for a friend…
Love becomes visible through the small choices we make every day.
Caregiving Changes the Caregiver Too
One thing I never expected was how much serving someone else would transform me.
Service softens us.
It teaches humility.
It reminds us that our worth isn’t measured by what we accomplish, but by how faithfully we love.
Ironically, while we believe we’re helping someone else…
Often we’re the ones being changed.
Living This Every Day
This understanding didn’t remain part of one extraordinary experience.
It became the way I try to live.
As a husband.
As a father.
As a friend. As someone still learning every day.
Service isn’t another task to complete.
It’s simply love becoming action.
A Continuing Journey
This lesson is one of the themes I explore in my From Light to Life video series, where I share how life’s deepest experiences continue shaping the way I love, serve, and live today.
You can also explore more of this journey through my book, Quarks of Light, and my appearance in the documentary The In Between Threshold, created by Jim Burton and Gary DeMoss.
If you’re a parent…
A caregiver…
Or simply someone trying to love another person well…
Remember this:
You don’t have to change someone’s life to change their day.
Sometimes…The greatest service you can offer is simply showing up.
